Asian-American and Pacific Islander -AAPI

UNLV Course for the Northern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program (NNRPDP)
Discover how we collaborated with a post-doctoral fellow to create a micro-credentialing course exploring Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history and contemporary experiences in the U.S. and Nevada.
Cover for the case study titled: 'Asian-American and Pacific Islander - AAPI.' It features a warm and joyful family portrait set outdoors, with four family members smiling at the camera. The family is positioned within a curved frame, outlined with a dashed red line, which blends into a subtle map graphic in the background. The design conveys a sense of unity, heritage, and belonging.
Screenshot of a part of a course. This section of the course is titled 'Asians Immigrated to the United States in Multiple Waves.' It presents two distinct waves of Asian immigration. The first wave (1776-1812) highlights Filipino and Chinese traders, sailors, and laborers, with a black-and-white photograph of early Asian settlers. The second wave (1830s-1860s) discusses the influx of Chinese immigrants during the California Gold Rush and railroad construction, accompanied by another historical photograph. The text details the contributions and challenges faced by these immigrants.

What We Did

We designed a 15-hour instructor-led online micro-credential featuring lectures, readings, podcasts, videos, an interactive glossary, reflection questions, surveys, assessments, and open educational resources.

How We Did It

We structured the course to be informative, thought-provoking, and experiential, incorporating critical research activities that examine historical facts and their ongoing impact on AAPI communities. Field activities encourage participants to explore diverse AAPI populations, emphasizing interconnected aspects of race, ethnicity, class, culture, and community bonds. Students maintain a reflection notebook to deepen their understanding.

Course schedule from the UNLV College of Education detailing a five-week program on the Asian American Pacific Islander Experience. Each week includes an overview session (1 hour) and a module (3 hours) covering topics such as historical context, migration flow, AAPIs in Nevada, K-12 education, and cross-cultural solidarity. The background features a subtle map design.

What We Accomplished

A comprehensive program that illuminates the evolving AAPI experience and equips educators with knowledge, practical tools, and resources to enrich learning in their classrooms and communities.
