As part of the Youth Rebel Start Academy team in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Ana Maria Mass, founder of Noveduca, whose expertise was invaluable in developing our interactive peer tutor training modules. This two-year dual credit program allows high school students starting their junior year to earn up to 39 credits of college-level coursework while preparing them to become effective peer tutors for elementary-aged students in reading and mathematics.

Dr. Mass and her team brought a wealth of expertise in online higher education, playing a pivotal role in transforming the training modules into dynamic and engaging learning experiences. Her insights into structuring the content for maximum engagement ensured that the modules were not only educationally sound but also highly relevant and accessible for high school students.

Thanks to Dr. Mass’s guidance, the modules now incorporate interactive elements that actively engage students, fostering not only academic tutoring skills but also relationship-building, communication, and mentorship. This comprehensive approach supports both the personal and professional development of the peer tutors, ensuring they are well-prepared to form meaningful connections with their younger counterparts.

Dr. Mass’s ability to blend academic rigor with interactive learning design made her an invaluable partner in this project. Her contributions provided a solid foundation for high school students to grow as tutors and mentors while impacting the elementary learners they support.
